Phantasmal Poison Dart Frog – Sunday Sketches

Sunday Sketches

I have something to post for Sunday Sketches! First time in a long time.

Derwent Inktense pencils were recommended to me last week and by cashing in my birthday pressie from Hubby, I was able to go out and buy some yesterday. So it was with eagerness that I set out to test these new watercolour/ink pencils.

I have been meaning to do another frog, leading on from my Blue Poison Dart Frog for sometime and this was the perfect opportunity. Not only can I submit this for Sunday Sketches, but I can also present it at the art group I am attending on Thursdays for this month (after all that is where I heard about the pencils int he first place :D).

So after scouring Google for inspiration this is what I came up with.

Phantasmal poison dart frog final

Phantasmal Poison Dart Frog, Inktense watercolour pencils with gel pen on illustration board, approx. 200 x 200 mm.

It took me a span of 24 hours interrupted by sleep, children and the need to feed. It has its faults, but I am really happy with it right at this moment 😀

Here are some in progress shots. Unlike my usual watercolour pencil technique, I didn’t pencil everything in then add water, I pencilled a bit, then watered a bit, very much freely. Could be an aspect of the medium, could just be me freeing up my style.

Don’t forget to check out the other great art being created over at Sunday Sketches!

Just gorgeous… there was a programme this morning about a tiny red poisonous frog that carries its’ tadpoles on it’s back one by one up a tree to put them in bromide plants that capture water and offer a safe haven for tadpoles… and then mother frog lays an egg in each little pool as food for her tadpoles each day..She’s the size of a thumb nail.. amazing… 🙂
