This week for Sunday Sketches, I decided to crank up my portraiture skills. I then promptly found I didn’t really have any and that I really need to practise more.
In any case, here is the sketch that proved to me that I really need to free up my style in this area. I think I might make it a little project of mine and hopefully it will come freer and more lively.
KJ Feb 2011, HB & 2B graphite pencil on cartridge, approx. 220 x 250 mm
Practise makes perfect, so I guess I’ll need to practise some more.

How can you say you don’t have any portrait skills when you produce this wonderful picture. Really great!
This is great! It made me happy when I looked at it. It conjures up thoughts of play and running about in the wind. It’s fab!

This is beautiful!!! Very good work!
Awwwww… if you could only value your skills as much as we all do!
Do you know what my very favorite part of this piece is?
Those lovely, delicate, wispy, eyelashes!
No portrait skills?!?! Are you kidding me? It’s amazing. I’M the one who needs more practice. ha ha
Happy SS!! ๐
this is wonderful…I guess we all have different standards, because it’s a fabulous portrait as far as I can see!
Fabulous hair – hair is tricky – love the movement and expression – you are so funny – i see talent!
she looks great to me! Love the hair, lashes and teeth (I find teeth hard to draw).
Your proportions are all very accurate, natural looking. I think it’s pretty durn good. Of course, practice is always called for…
I love the free movement in this and the expression on her face. I think it is lively and wonderful!
This is wonderful, full of joy, free flowing hair, contentment… Living the moment!
You have captured such a wonderfully joyful moment in time… beautifully.

This is soo adorable!! ๐ love it!
[…] the reason for all this rambling is that I did a sketch of my daughter the other day for Sunday Sketches and it has encouraged me to turn a focus on my portraiture again. […]
[…] dipping my hand back into portraiture a couple of weeks ago with my sketch of KJ, I thought I would poke around my creative neighbourhood and look for some magic pencil wielders. […]
you are delirious. this is great!
